Facts About Radon

A Guide for Real Estate Professionals

This simple guide gives you, the real estate professional, the knowledge to keep clients safe.

Fact 1

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in America behind smoking cigarettes. It is the leading cause of cancer for non-smokers. Approximately 21,000 people die every year from radon’s toxicity, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Fact 2

Radon gets trapped in homes where levels become concentrated. Because we heat and cool our homes there is considerable air movement, which creates negative pressure that literally sucks radon from the ground into our homes from the ground.

Fact 3

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is all around us and is emitted through from the ground. If there are high levels in the air, there may be high levels in the water. We use high-quality radon test kits specifically designed for real estate transactions, which collect samples over a 48 hour period. We also have radon testing kits for water.

Fact 4

There is no way to predict which home has radon, unless it is tested. One home may have high levels of radon, while next door there may be none. Seasonal changes even impact its presence.

Fact 5

The Hudson Valley is in Zone 1, which means radon levels are often high enough to require mitigation. Fixing the radon problem is relatively easy, called mitigation, and a good investment in your client’s health.

Refer us to your clients for their inspection. We know radon, and we offer free radon testing for first time clients.
